Part 7: The Exhibition

The archive prepared the exhibition in a room above the library. Lena selected the type samples and checked that the labels distinguished documented facts from memories. Rose and Miriam reviewed the description of Ada's work and corrected the date of one photograph.
Ms. Kim contributed a copy of the old building plan. Mr. Bell lent the sign after the conservator stabilized the loose frame. I brought a small tray of almond cake for the opening, with the ingredients listed for visitors who needed them.
Rose arrived with Adrian but chose her own seat. The library had arranged chairs with clear paths between them. Lena asked whether Rose wanted to introduce the collection. Rose said she would like to speak for a few minutes, then let Miriam explain the photographs.
She held the receipt with the shapes in her hand. “I drew this because I remembered the building,” she said. “I didn't know whether the papers were still there.”
She described Ada's work and the crooked shelf. She thanked Ms. Kim for checking the plans and the contractor for opening the panel safely. Then she thanked Eva—that was me—for asking before calling Adrian and for letting her finish her pastry.
The room laughed. Rose waited until the laughter ended. “A person can need help finding a bus and still know which cake she wants,” she said.
Miriam showed the photograph of Ada beside the press. She explained that the family had chosen to share some items and keep others private. A visitor asked whether the invoices would be available online. Lena said the archive was still reviewing them and would not publish personal details simply because the papers were old.
Mr. Bell pointed to his sign and told the story of the frame his father had built. Another visitor recognized a typeface from a wedding program. Lena invited her to write down the information and leave a contact number if she wanted the archive to follow up.
Adrian stayed near the back until Rose asked him to join her. She handed him the receipt and said, “You thought it was a mountain.”
“I did.”
“Now you know it's a roof.”
He placed it beside the photograph of the shop, where the label explained that the shapes were Rose's memory of the building. The label did not claim that the drawing had revealed a secret room. The plans and the contractor had established where the old storage area was.
After the opening, Rose became tired. Adrian asked whether she wanted to leave or rest in the quiet room. She chose the quiet room and asked for water. Miriam sat with her while Adrian collected their coats.
I joined them for a few minutes. Rose asked whether the cake had sold well at the bakery. I said it had, and that some customers preferred the version with more lemon. She looked amused.
“They're allowed,” she said. “Ada isn't here to argue.”
Miriam touched the photograph in her lap. “She would have argued anyway.”
We laughed. Rose asked Miriam whether she would visit again before returning home. Miriam said yes, and they chose a day together. Adrian wrote it in the calendar only after Rose confirmed the time.
