The Bride Who Walked Away

Part 11

Part 11 · 3 min read ·

When I entered the ballroom corridor, I could hear the string quartet rehearsing.

Guests were already gathering.

Some stood near the reception tables.

Others were taking photographs beneath the floral arch.

The entire room smelled of roses and expensive perfume.

Then I saw Vanessa.

She was standing beside the bridal table.

She was still wearing my ivory reception dress.

The pearl buttons down the back were visible beneath her long hair.

She held a champagne glass and laughed at something one of the guests had said.

Ethan stood beside her.

He had changed nothing about his appearance except his tie.

When he saw me, his face went pale.

“Clare.”

The conversation around us gradually faded.

Vanessa turned.

For a moment, she looked almost disappointed.

Then she smiled.

“Oh, good.

You’re here.”

I didn’t respond.

Ethan walked toward me.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m canceling the wedding.”

He lowered his voice.

“Not here.”

“You told everyone I was unwell.”

“Clare, please.”

“I came to correct that.”

He glanced around.

“Can we talk privately?”

I looked toward the guests.

Several people were watching us.

Some appeared confused.

Others looked uncomfortable.

I had spent the entire morning trying not to make a scene.

I was finished protecting the comfort of people who had never protected mine.

“No.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re embarrassing everyone.”

I looked at him.

“Everyone?”

He took a step closer.

“Clare, this is not the place.”

“You made it the place when you used my wedding as a distraction.”

His expression changed.

Vanessa approached.

“Clare, what are you talking about?”

I turned toward her.

She was still wearing the dress.

I looked at the pearl buttons.

Then at her face.

“Did you enjoy the limousine?”

Her smile disappeared.

“What?”

“Did you enjoy wearing my dress?”

“That’s not what this is about.”

“You’re right.”

I looked at Ethan.

“It’s about the money.”

The room became completely silent.

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Stop.”

I continued.

“I discovered that assets connected to my investment in Hawthorne & Cole Consulting were transferred into a secondary holding company.”

I paused.

“Vanessa Cole is listed as its sole beneficiary.”

A murmur moved through the guests.

Vanessa’s champagne glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

“That’s a lie.”

“No.

It’s in the corporate records.”

Ethan reached for my arm.

I stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.”

He lowered his hand.

“Clare, you don’t understand the business structure.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked around.

I could see him searching for a way to regain control.

“We were going to discuss this privately.”

“When?”

“After the ceremony.”

“After you married me?”

He said nothing.

I looked toward Vanessa.

“Did you know?”

She lifted her chin.

“I’m a managing partner.

I know how the company works.”

“Then you should also know why my investment was transferred without my knowledge.”

“Your investment was part of the business.”

“Yes.

That’s why I expected the records to reflect what I actually agreed to.”

Vanessa glanced toward Ethan.

It was a tiny movement.

But I saw it.

And so did he.

I continued.

“There are also wire transfers connected to Julian Vance’s withdrawal from the company.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Enough.”

“His signature on the withdrawal agreement appears inconsistent with the original partnership documents.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Julian left voluntarily.”

“Then you shouldn’t have any problem with an independent examination of the documents.”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“You’re making accusations you cannot prove.”

“I’m asking questions that your records should be able to answer.”

He stared at me.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“You were never supposed to see those documents until everything was finalized.”

I felt the room shift around me.
