The Christmas They Tried to Charge Claire For

Part 1

Part 1 · 1 min read ·

At 5:47 on Christmas Eve, my husband texted me that I was banned from his mother’s dinner.

Three seconds later, he demanded $16,800 to pay for it.

“Mom wants a peaceful Christmas,” Ryan wrote. “Send the money before six. Don’t make this ugly.”

I stared at the message in my quiet kitchen, where a single candle burned beside the picture of my late mother.

For eleven years, I had cooked, decorated, mailed invitations, bought presents, and quietly paid the bills for the Walker family Christmas in Columbus, Ohio.

Last year alone, I covered seventy-two dinners, a heated tent, and nearly two thousand dollars in gifts for children I barely knew.

And still, Ryan’s mother, Barbara, had raised her glass and announced, “Maybe next year Claire won’t ruin everything with her attitude.”

Everyone laughed.

I had been washing dishes when she said it.

Two weeks earlier, I finally overheard what they said when they thought I was outside carrying boxes.

“She can sit in the kitchen with the staff,” Barbara told Ryan’s sister, Tessa. “Nobody wants her depressing face in the family pictures.”

Ryan laughed.

“She’ll pay anyway. Claire always needs to prove she belongs.”
