The Christmas They Tried to Charge Claire For

Part 5

Part 5 · 1 min read ·

On December 26, I called the pantry director using the number on its official website.

“We never authorized a fundraiser through that family,” she said. “We haven’t received any of those donations.”

My hands went cold.

Denise advised me not to accuse anyone publicly until we had preserved the records. She helped me organize the messages, payment confirmations, receipts, and the disputed contract.

Then Tessa sent me a text.

“Drop this. Mom says she’ll make sure you never see the kids again.”

I had practically raised Tessa’s twins through their father’s illness. The threat landed exactly where she intended.

That afternoon, Aunt Ruth called once more.

“Claire, there’s something else. Ryan has been telling people you’re mentally unstable. He says you signed papers giving him control of your business.”

I looked at the locked cabinet containing my company records.

Then my work email chimed.

A lender wanted to verify an application for a $94,000 loan.

The collateral listed was the building my mother had left me.
