The House Claire Kept

I looked at Dad.

“This isn’t valid.”

“I know,” he said.

The words surprised everyone.

Mom turned toward him.

“Dennis—”

“I said I know.”

For the first time that night, my father looked embarrassed.

He admitted that they had expected to show me the document after Megan moved in.

Their reasoning was simple: once three children were already sleeping upstairs, once their clothes were in the closets and their toys were everywhere, I would feel too guilty to force them out.

They hadn’t misunderstood me.

They had planned around me.

That realization hurt more than the copied key.

“You were going to trap me emotionally.”

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“We were trying to help your sister.”

“By taking my house?”

“No one was taking it.”

Megan suddenly stood.

“You always make everything about money and ownership.”

I stared at her.

“It’s my home. Ownership is relevant.”

One of the officers had to hide a smile.

Megan didn’t.

Her face went red.

Then she made her final mistake.

“You wouldn’t even have this place if Mom and Dad hadn’t raised you.”

The room became quiet again.

I walked to the front door and opened it.

“Take your things.”

Megan refused.

So the officers explained it once more.

She had no signed agreement from me. She wasn’t on the deed. She hadn’t established residency. I had explicitly denied her permission to remain.

An hour later, the moving truck was being loaded again.

The children were exhausted and confused, which was the only part of the situation I truly hated. None of it was their fault. I helped my youngest niece find her missing stuffed rabbit beneath my couch and carried one box outside for her.
