The Evening of the Dinner
Part 6 · 2 min read ·
Rain threatened on the evening of the dinner, so the staff moved the welcome table beneath the terrace awning. The accessible route remained open, and Giulia checked the signs before guests arrived. The lower garden was closed as planned. No one tried to make the unfinished section look complete.
Marta welcomed children into the activity room and confirmed each parent's contact details. Nina entered holding Ada's hand. She placed her paper badge beside her drawing and chose a seat near the window. Ada reminded her where she would be working and when they would meet again.
“If you need me, tell Marta,” she said.
Nina nodded. “And if you need a snack?”
“I'll ask an adult at the dinner.”
“That is a good plan.”
Guests arrived in coats damp from the light rain. A woman using a wheelchair tested the new route with her brother. The temporary surface held firm, and the handrail gave her a steady place to rest. She told Giulia that the route was useful but suggested a clearer sign near the parking area. Giulia wrote the suggestion down and moved an existing sign so it could be seen from the gate.
Inside, Silvio greeted donors and neighbors. He introduced Leila before speaking about the family center. “The people who use a service should help shape it,” he said. “Our plans improved when we listened to them.”
Leila described the center's work and explained how the evening's donations would be used. She thanked the villa staff by name, including the gardener, the contractor's team, Renata and the catering crew. Ada stood near the back with a tray of glasses. She did not expect a public thank-you, but hearing the work named made her feel visible.
During the main course, a volunteer reported that the activity room was running low on paper. Ada checked with Marta before bringing more. She did not enter with a camera or call the children into the dining room for applause. The room existed to give families a choice, not to provide a performance for guests.
At the end of the evening, Nina emerged with a drawing of the garden. Silvio was standing beside Lucia's bench, speaking with the retired teacher. Nina approached with Ada, holding the paper in both hands.
“Your flowers are safe,” she told him.
“I see that you've checked,” Silvio said.
She pointed to a yellow shape beside the bench. “That's a snack for the guard.”
He accepted the drawing after Ada said it was all right. “May I put it in the garden room?”
Nina considered the request. “Yes, but the bear needs a copy.”
Renata offered to make one. The bear would not be left out of the official record.
The rain stopped before the last guests departed. Leila and the accountant counted the donations using the agreed procedure and promised a public report after the funds cleared. Silvio did not announce a total from memory. He thanked the staff and asked them to take their scheduled breaks while the remaining work was shared.
When Ada and Nina left, the path lights reflected in the wet paving. Nina held her mother's hand and carried the copy of her drawing under her coat. “Did I do my job?” she asked.
“You listened to Marta, stayed where we agreed and told us what you needed.”
Nina smiled. “And I had a snack.”
“That too.”
