Six months later, the Mercer Building's bakery reopened after a modest renovation approved by the tenants. The disputed sale had not gone through. The bank completed its review, and a settlement arranged through our attorneys returned the maintenance money to the building's account. Victor and I finalized our divorce.
I kept the hotel video. It reminded me of a moment I was not proud of, and of the apology and counseling I chose afterward. Being betrayed had not given me permission to strike anyone. I could take responsibility for that without surrendering the boundaries I had finally set.
Maya sent a short message on the day the settlement was signed. I hope the bakery stays open. I wrote back that it would. It was not a friendship, just an honest exchange between two women who had been told different versions of the same lie.
Mrs. Patel handed me a warm paper bag at the bakery door. “Your mother would have liked seeing the windows repaired,” she said.
For years, I had pictured the building as something I was responsible for protecting alone. Now the people inside it had helped me do exactly that. I looked up at the new windows, then down at the keys in my hand.
They belonged to me. The next chapter did too.
