The Mug on the Hallway Floor

Part 8

Part 8 · 1 min read ·

A year after the night of the key card, Elise returned from a meeting with the tenants of her mother's building. The repairs they had chosen together were finished, and the accounting was transparent. She had hired a property manager who sent reports directly to her.

The divorce was final. Nathan had written an apology without asking for another chance. Elise read it, then filed it away. She had no obligation to turn his regret into a new beginning.

That evening, she made tea and stood in the hallway in her familiar white T-shirt. The apartment was quiet, but the silence no longer felt like waiting for an explanation.

Her phone rang. It was Diane, asking whether she wanted to come to dinner. Elise looked at the mug, the new table and the paint they had finally made even.

“Give me ten minutes,” she said.

Before leaving, she set the cup on the table rather than the floor. She locked the door behind her and walked toward the elevator, carrying no envelope and no secret for anyone else to keep.

The life she chose was not the one she had planned. It was the first one she had stopped asking permission to live.
