The Two Women at Room 1806

Part 1

Part 1 · 1 min read ·

The hotel door opened before I knocked a second time. Dominic stood there in a white bath towel, his dark hair still damp. He looked past me, saw Madison standing just behind my shoulder, and lost his smile.

For five years, I had been the wife Dominic introduced at charity dinners: Grace Russo, quiet, elegant, grateful. For the past six months, Madison Vale had been the woman he met in private. Neither of us knew the whole truth until an envelope reached my office that morning.

I lifted the photographs between us. Dominic reaching for Madison at a restaurant. Dominic entering the Langford Hotel beside her. Dominic presenting a key card he had told me was for an overseas investor. “Tell us which one of us you lied to,” I said.

Madison stepped beside me in a modest dark red robe. I had come straight from the hotel spa with her, still wearing the pale blue satin robe tied securely at my waist. “Start with the part where you said your divorce was final.” Her voice did not shake, but her fingers held the strap of her bag so tightly that her knuckles had gone pale.

Dominic reached for the pictures. I let them fall instead. They scattered against his bare chest and fluttered onto the patterned carpet between us. He stared at the evidence, then at Madison. “This is not what it looks like.”

“Then explain it,” I said. “Both of us are listening.”

Inside the room, a phone vibrated. Dominic glanced back so quickly that Madison noticed. She took out a printout of the message that had brought her there: an invitation from him, sent two hours earlier. He had told me he was in New York. He had told her he was already free.

The phone vibrated again. On the carpet, one photograph lay faceup beneath his shoe. In the corner I saw the edge of a document I knew he had sworn did not exist.
