“You don’t have to.”
“I know. Get in.”
“Whose car is that?”
“Mr. Sutton’s. He’s always in here for meetings with Lauren. He says it’s his.”
“It’s not his. It’s ours. It’s a fleet car assigned to the ambassador program for events.”
“Right now, nobody can show me a single event. And right now, it’s parked at our front door.”
“Why are you doing this? You don’t even know me.”
“You called security on a stranger, then came out with coffee and said sorry. I know enough.”
“There was something else on those forms. Not an event. A venue deposit.”
“Harbor Point 41A. $480,000.”
“I asked her what event it was for. She didn’t even look up. She just told me to sign it.”
“$480,000 for a venue?”
“That’s her building. The penthouse she’s closing on Friday. Forty-first floor. She told me this morning.”
“Who’s her fiancé?”
“She never says his name. Just that he drives our flagship.”
“Blake Sutton.”
“Oh my God.”
“Marcus, the 480 for Harbor Point 41A, did we wire it straight to them?”
“Straight into their escrow account.”
“Then call them as the payer. Ask what our money bought.”
“Called their sales office right before they closed.”
“Lauren Barrett.”
“Our $480,000 is booked as the purchase deposit on unit 41A. Buyer, Lauren Barrett. Closing Friday.”
“And who told Emma to sign it?”
“Paper can’t tell us that. Only Lauren can.”
“Maybe she doesn’t know where the money came from.”
“Either way, it’s her name on it.”
“Then he’s using her, too.”
“Emma, tomorrow at ten. Wear your badge.”
“They took it.”
“I’ll bring it.”
“Emma was Sutton’s contact?”
